February 15 has come and gone and, true to form, people are ordering web sites. Every year at this time it seems like people with web site needs (a polite way to put it) step forward to begin curing their Internet ills.
If you are having one of these reflective moments about your web site, here are some current thoughts on Internet content you should be considering.
1) You can have a Flash web site and search engine optimization at the same time. If you are dying for rich media like Flash or Flash video but the SEO fearmongers out there have you convinced you can’t have both, you should do your homework. There are a number of ways to have the best of both worlds. If you need it explained, just email me at donald@dogstarmedia.com.
2) Rich media indulges the user experience. People want to watch video, see people and read less. Just like in education, the more senses you engage the more points stick. They call it rich media for a reason! The experience is just better. If you have to wade through pages and pages of written content on your web site, you are simply not making it as easy as possible.
3) Put yourself in the user’s position. Shop online for a luxury car. The same way that choosing cosmetic surgery or cosmetic dentistry is a major upgrade-type purchase for a prospect, shop online for a luxury car. Shop for your major upgrade-type automobile. What do you see on those web sites? Does your web site offer the user this sort of experience? Now here is the kicker... Your web site users are probably looking at those higher end web sites, too.
4) If something inside you is telling you to add video, don’t ignore it. Video on the web has gone from “cool extra” to “expected” on quality web sites. Video is the richest media of all.
And, finally, 5) If your site was produced more than a few years ago, you need to ask some serious questions. Chiefly, is the site dated both in design and capability? Do you realize that your web site is often the first impression you and your practice gets to make?
You should review your web site at least once a year. If you are doing this, or if I have given you something to think about, I suggest you look around and give yourself an informed basis from which to form an opinion. And, of course, I recommend Dog Star Media for your next web site design.

It's time for that post again
Two to three times a year, I have to make this post. It's the you need to relax post.
I've sent this message pre-blog when gas prices first pushed past $2.50/gallon a year ago last summer. I wrote it last summer during a very common slowdown. And, right on schedule, it is time for this post again.
The fact is very few small businesses can avoid business cycles. There are times when things are slow. This is when I try to calm clients and tell them that pushing through slow times is a way to remind them to add marketing tactics, not give in to a bunker mentality.
This time, don't just take it from me. Take it from Mark Cuban. Anyone who does not know the owner of The Dallas Mavericks (my NBA team) and noted billionaire entrepreneur. There is a lot of techno/big business mumbo jumbo in his blog at http://www.blogmaverick.com. But every once in a while, you get some gold that is meant for every business owner out there that needs a shot in the arm. I encourage you to read his blog post from December 30 of last year. The title of the post is The One Thing You Can Control in Life: Effort.

New Web Site by DSM and a New Initiative
We have an excellent new web site to show. I am proud to show off the new web site for Paris Surgical Specialists for several reasons. Not only is it an excellent HTML site that includes video set in Flash, but it is a site that flew through our creative process. Russell Boyd in Paris, Tennessee deserves some recognition for allowing us the freedom to design such a site.
When I was at the AACS meeting last week, I was met with a surprise. I knew that my blog was being read but I had no idea how much my readers were connecting with it. This blog will always have new ideas, new examples and the annoucement of new services but, through the power of blogging, I realized that a more focused blog could do even more good.
Beginning in February, I will be writing a specialized blog focusing on the single most underdeveloped area of marketing: cultivating referrals. This new blog will be a bi-weekly post outlining and analyzing what it takes to create the kind of ongoing market stimulation that is required to maximize a referral market. It will not be linked to any web site. The only way to reach it is through the emails I send you.
Over the next week, I will be developing a special invitation email list for this blog. This will be based on many factors, one of which is the interest shown by readers. This blog will begin on Tuesday, February 5. If you do not receive an email inviting you to this blog on that night and you wish to be enrolled. Just email me at donald@dogstarmedia.com.

The Shared Experience and Cosmetic Surgery
Having just attended the AACS 24th Annual Scientific Meeitng in Orlando, this is the perfect time to discuss a marketing concept called “The Shared Experience.” You get it at conventions, meetings like this one, sporting events, concerts/shows and other public events. In short, The Shared Experience elevates the value of an event and deepens connection you feel to it.
This ties in directly to why we think our new Post-Operative Health and Fitness DVD series will be such a great marketing tool for cosmetic surgeons that try it. The Shared Experience is built into it. More on that later.
Mark Cuban had a great blog on The Shared Experience on blogmaverick.com a few months ago. In explaining the concept, his example was a contrast of the live movie-going experience as opposed to watching a movie release on pay per view or DVD. I’ll use the Super Bowl to illustrate, since it’s right around the corner. Each year, the Super Bowl is the most watched television event. And, for hard-core football fans for me, it is one of the most frustrating football days of the season as Super Bowl parties and fair weather fans jumping on team’s bandwagons for that one day. You know what I am talking about… the people who watch one game a year in the Super Bowl just to be part of the big day. (I have noticed that many of these people are the ones complaining that there is too much football on Thanksgiving but that is another topic).
These people jump on the pile on Super Bowl Sunday to be part of the party… to be part of The Shared Experience. In itself, the experience of Super Bowl is more popular than the game itself. Over the past 20 years this has been so ingrained into our culture that some businesses give Super Bowl Monday off to employees, the television network carrying the game sets their biggest show premiere for after the game and there is a movement afoot to make Super Bowl Monday a national holiday.
The glue that holds all of this together is the fact that we all want to watch the same live events unfolding at the same time. If something happens, the world is watching and you can be part of that if you are dialed in. This is the essence of The Shared Experience.
Broadcast media and the tools that bring it to us created a quantum jump in the potential of The Shared Experience. In the old days, and I mean the real old days, you used to have to be there. Once The Shared Experience could be broadcast, radio and then television brought us the world. Look at The Shared Experience of the OJ Simpson Bronco chase. Don’t you feel like you had a ringside seat for that if you watched it? Surely the compelling action did not lock you in that June night. You had to see what happened… along with everyone else.

Lipo DVD Excerpt Preview
